Gege Akutami imagined Yuta and Rika long before the launch of the main anime
Although Yuta Okkotsu was born before Yuji Itadori, the mangaka Akutami chose the latter as the hero of the main series. Like Yuji in season 1, Yuta starts as a novice in the complex world of jujutsu. His path begins tragically with the loss of his childhood best friend, Rika Orimoto, who, after her death, becomes a powerful curse attached to him.
The promise ring Rika gave to Yuta seals their eternal bond. At the moment of Rika's death, on a busy street, Yuta utters her name, unknowingly triggering the curse that binds her to his life. The formidable power of this "Queen of Curses" is such that the elders of the Jujutsu Society see Yuta as a danger, seeking to execute him. Thanks to Satoru Gojo, he escapes this fate and joins the Exorcism School. There, he meets Maki Zenin, Inumaki Toge, and Panda, future comrades-in-arms.
The battle against Suguru Geto and the liberation of Rika

Suguru Geto, with his hateful rhetoric against non-sorcerers, presents himself as a formidable adversary. He triggers the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons, creating chaos to weaken the Jujutsu Society. While evil forces scatter the defenders, Geto directly targets Yuta, aiming to steal Rika's power to strengthen his own abilities.
Isolated, Yuta draws on his courage and love for Rika to resist. He manages to defeat the cursed spirits sent by Geto, then, in an ultimate act of bravery, sacrificing his promise to accompany her beyond, unlocks Rika's full power. This fusion allows him to defeat Geto in an intense duel.
A tragic fate for Geto and a new destiny for Yuta
Severely beaten, Geto ultimately succumbs to the fatal blow from Gojo. However, the latter hides the body, allowing Kenjaku to seize it. Yuta's guilt lingers, but he later mobilizes all his strength to confront this new enemy. Meanwhile, thanks to the sealing kiss with Rika, she finally finds peace, leaving behind a cursed spirit still by his side. During the first season of the anime, Yuta trains in the shadows, preparing his heroic return, marking a turning point in the fight against the growing evil.

In the anime, Yuta starts as an overwhelmed observer but quickly evolves into a key character capable of tipping the fate of many battles. Initially unaware of the occult energy, Yuta is quickly recognized as a special-grade sorcerer — a prestigious rank held by few. Mainly thanks to Rika's power, he confirms this status after her full release. According to Gojo, his immense reserve of cursed energy comes from his ancestral ties, notably as a descendant of Michizane Sugawara and distant relative of the Gojo clan.
His fighting style revolves around sword mastery but also includes various weapons and close-combat techniques, honed alongside Maki Zenin. Powerful in hand-to-hand combat, he can inflict significant damage even unarmed.
A unique ability makes Yuta a fearsome opponent: he can copy others' Cursed Techniques after Rika absorbs a piece of the target's body. Unlike other copying abilities in shonen anime, Yuta can store an infinite number of these techniques in Rika indefinitely. However, his direct connection only lasts five minutes — more than enough to dominate most enemies.
A spectacular and strategically balanced Domain Expansion
Yuta's Domain Expansion reveals a vast dome structure composed of countless swords, each symbolizing a copied Cursed Technique. Called "True Mutual Love," this barrier allows Yuta to choose a technique from his copies to activate automatically within the domain.
Although this limitation prevents him from becoming uncontrollable against Gojo or Sukuna, it ensures overall balance in his fights. The tactical nature of this ability demands Yuta be a master strategist, selecting the right technique at the right moment to maximize impact.
The decisive role of Yuta Okkotsu in the fight against the King of Curses
A sorcerer able to use Gojo's body to confront Sukuna
Among the highlights of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuta's fights are some of the most intense. After ending Kenjaku, he uses his power and Rika to destroy his body. During the final confrontation against Sukuna, Yuta uses Gojo's body to activate his powerful Six Eyes and Infinite Void techniques, causing significant damage to the enemy.
Despite several attempts, the five-minute limit with Rika and the collapse of the Infinite Void techniques force Yuta to retreat, leaving Yuji to continue the battle.
Yuta's post-arc destiny
Though presumed dead for a time, Rika fully restores him, including his brain. Yuta then apologizes to Yuji and others, who defend his choices despite past misunderstandings. Towards the end of the anime, he appears alongside Maki, Inumaki, and a miniature Panda, suggesting a long and rich life after the major events.
The connection with the Gojo clan is confirmed, Yuta becoming interim leader, and the appearance of his grandchildren hints at a flourishing legacy, bringing hope and continuity to his legend.
