However, not all Bankai shine equally; some appear modest or even disappointing against seasoned opponents or more elaborate powers.

Fervent Bleach fans know well that no Bankai is weaker than its Shikai or a sealed Zanpakuto in base power. That said, they are not all equal in efficiency or strategic impact. Several Bankai have modest power or notable vulnerabilities, which experienced enemies can easily counter or destroy. Moreover, some young wielders only have embryonic Bankai forms, promising future development but currently among the less impressive in the franchise.
15. Suzumushi Tsuishiki: Enma Korogi, an easily neutralizable Bankai
Wielder: Kaname Tosen
Kaname Tosen, notorious as one of the three traitors who left the Gotei 13 during the Soul Society arc, recalls his mythical battle against Zaraki Kenpachi. His Shikai Suzumushi has two distinct modes, each with formidable effects, but its power pales compared to his Bankai.
The Bankai Suzumushi Tsuishiki: Enma Korogi creates an immense sphere of total darkness, plunging both Tosen and his opponent into complete sensory deprivation: sight, hearing, and even breathing are blocked, leaving only touch as a functioning sense. Although Tosen, long blind, adapts easily, Kenpachi quickly exploits the weakness by sensing Tosen's presence through a single powerful touch. This detail, allowing neutralization of the Bankai by simply touching the sword handle, highlights the fragility of this power.
14. Sakashima Yokoshima Happofusagari: an effective but limited mechanic
Wielder: Shinji Hirako
Captain Shinji Hirako, a Gotei 13 veteran with a unique flair, wields his Shikai Sakanade by spreading a pink mist that disorients opponents with complex visual illusions, hard to counter except by an exceptional strategist like Aizen.
His Bankai Sakashima Yokoshima Happofusagari, developed during the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, intensifies the effect by forcing sensory permeability — all allies and enemies exchange perceptions, plunging the area into dramatic confusion. However, its range is very limited because its effect only applies when the zone lacks allies, significantly restricting its effectiveness in real combat.
13. Daiguren Hyorinmaru: powerful but incomplete and fragile Bankai
Wielder: Toshiro Hitsugaya
Toshiro Hitsugaya's Bankai Daiguren Hyorinmaru is renowned for its impressive potential, granting flight, freezing enemies, and limb regeneration through water. However, early appearances show Hitsugaya often using an incomplete version, as his mastery is not total and his energy depletes quickly in this fragile form.
Only after the Thousand-Year Blood War arc does the fully realized and truly formidable form reveal itself, giving Hitsugaya a notable advantage in decisive battles. However, this full power lasts briefly, forcing him mostly to rely on the limited version.
12. Koko Gonryo Rikyu: weakened after a major defeat
Wielder: Chojiro Sasakibe
As the vice-captain of Division 1 and faithful second to Yamamoto Genryusai, Chojiro Sasakibe was perceived as weak in combat. His Bankai Koko Gonryo Rikyu is legendary for allegedly being able to harm Yamamoto, but reality revealed during the Thousand-Year Blood War is much humbler.
Indeed, his quick death attests to a power below expected standards. Some consider this Bankai a pale imitation, especially compared to stronger adversaries like Yamamoto himself or Driscoll Berci.
11. Fushi no Kojo: an embryonic and unthreatening Bankai
Wielder: Shuhei Hisagi
Unique on this list, the Bankai Fushi no Kojo comes from the light novel Can’t Fear Your Own World and was officially canonized with Tite Kubo’s direct collaboration. Based on the grim reaper motif, it allows Hisagi to heal both his wounds and those of his opponent, though sharing the energy cost.
However, this wound-sharing limits Hisagi’s ability to deliver a fatal blow without risking his own life, greatly reducing the effectiveness and threat this Bankai might represent in combat.
10. Jakuho Raikoben: a weapon poorly synergized with its style
Wielder: Soi Fon
Master of martial arts and discreet tactician of the Gotei 13, Soi Fon efficiently wields the Shikai Suzumebachi adapted to her stealthy style. Her Bankai Jakuho Raikoben takes the form of a gigantic artillery cannon, contrasting with her agile appearance and tactical style.
Although this colossal weapon is formidable in brute force, it proves ill-suited to her stealthy and quick nature. This Bankai seems better suited for explosive warriors like Kenpachi or Komamura rather than Soi Fon herself, despite her continued use.
9. Kinshara Butodan: an underutilized Bankai
Wielder: Rojuro Otoribashi
Mixing powers of Shinigami and Hollows as a Visored, Rojuro is particularly powerful thanks to his Hollow mask in combat. However, he did not fully exploit his Bankai Kinshara Butodan in the anime.
Used in a fight against Mask de Masculine, this musical Bankai lacked real impact, allowing the opponent to neutralize Rojuro and inflict a fatal wound. This setback highlighted notable limitations of this power in battle.
8. Tekken Tachikaze: a Bankai with mixed results
Wielder: Kensei Muguruma
Like Rojuro, Kensei Muguruma failed to defeat Mask de Masculine with his Bankai Tekken Tachikaze. The Squad 9 leader and seasoned Shinigami relied on powerful strikes, unfortunately ineffective against this formidable opponent.
Though presented as a tough fighter, his strong-hitting Bankai proved insufficient, preventing him from winning his duel during the Fake Karakura Town arc.
7. Ryumon Hozukimaru: a Bankai losing momentum
Wielder: Ikkaku Madarame
Formerly feared for his demonstrative brute strength, Ikkaku Madarame alternates between two forms. His first Bankai Ryumon Hozukimaru was once terrifying, especially against Espada Edrad Leones. However, its fragility in combat was quickly exposed, and despite repairs and Ayon’s support, it never regained full strength.
Though still impressive, this Bankai is now considered weakened, though complete restoration remains possible within the Zero squad.
6. Hakka No Togame: potential yet to be revealed
Wielder: Rukia Kuchiki
During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Rukia revealed her new Bankai Hakka no Togame. Aesthetically stunning and promising, it nonetheless requires intensive training and significant support, especially from her brother Byakuya Kuchiki.
Despite participating in combat, this Bankai remains fragile and temporary. It seems designed more to imprison powerful enemies than for prolonged full attack. Its true power is yet to be fully realized.
5. Kamishini no Yari: exceptional range with limited effects
Wielder: Gin Ichimaru
Former captain and traitor, Gin Ichimaru wields the Bankai Kamishini no Yari, a sword capable of extending its blade over 13 kilometers, granting exceptional range. However, the speed and agility of opponents often allow them to dodge its attacks, limiting its strategic impact.
Despite its speed and deadly poison, this Bankai remains basic in principle and loses any advantage in close combat where mobility prevails over distance.
4. Hihio Zabimaru: a mixed Bankai
Wielder: Renji Abarai
Developed in two versions, Renji’s first Bankai, Hihio Zabimaru, never matched the strongest Bankai in the universe. Though effective against some Espada Fraccion, it was quickly surpassed by major figures like Byakuya Kuchiki or Sosuke Aizen.
3. Bankai Engetsu: limited power in critical moments
Wielder: Isshin Kurosaki
Ichigo’s father, Isshin Kurosaki, is a former captain with combat Bankai and Shikai. However, his inability to activate Bankai while injured is a major limitation in key situations. This paradoxical restriction prevents him from revealing his full strength.
2. Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo: an outdated Bankai
Wielder: Mayuri Kurotsuchi
Dr. Mayuri Kurotsuchi deployed two versions of his Bankai Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo. The first was quickly thwarted, notably by Uryu Ishida. Even after upgrades, this Bankai showed notable limitations, compensated mainly by toxins or scientific tactics rather than brute power.
1. Kokujo Tengen Myo’o: a poorly performing colossus
Wielder: Sajin Komamura
The loyal and courageous Sajin Komamura fought with his Bankai Kokujo Tengen Myo’o, a giant avatar of prodigious strength but easily avoidable. This imposing Bankai exposed him to blatant vulnerabilities, leading to defeat against major enemies. Only his ultimate transformation, offering greater power, made a notable difference before his final collapse.
