Over the course of seven seasons, My Hero Academia has skillfully deepened the profiles of the twenty students of Class 1-A: their various manifestations of Quirks, their hero costumes, complex personalities, personal anecdotes, and even their decorative preferences illustrated notably during the dormitory contest. Some students stand out as true shonen heroes with captivating and rich story arcs, while others play ornamental roles, barely explored in the story, sometimes dismissed by Bakugo himself as mere "extras." Nevertheless, the top ten students of Class 1-A gather memorable characters, genuine heroes of the story, whose fans can follow, support, and admire their exploits.
Updated on March 2, 2025 by Louis Kemner: This list of major and popular characters of Class 1-A has been enriched with five new entries, reflecting fans' deep knowledge of all the students. With the end of the anime and the conclusion of the main story, the development of these young heroes is now complete, illustrating their growth as fighters and individuals.
15. Rikido Sato, the muscular hero with a big heart and a passion for baking
Rikido Sato, affectionately nicknamed Sugarman by his peers, is the last notable member of the best characters of Class 1-A mainly due to the more limited development of his background, even in the full anime version. This "gentle giant" embodies a beloved archetype where impressive physical strength is combined with a sweet and humble personality.
A sturdy teenager with powerful muscles thanks to his Sweet Attack Quirk, Rikido is a respectful and loyal student hero, avoiding abusing his strength. His shy and clumsy side in the art of baking adds to his natural charm. His victory in the dormitory contest thanks to his culinary skills strengthened his likability among his peers.
14. Mezo Shoji, a hero with sincere loyalty during the conflict against Spinner
Mezo Shoji, though less highlighted in the story, holds a modest position in the hierarchy of Class 1-A. However, his role was elucidated during season 7, through his engagement during the heteromorphic riot involving Spinner.
During this event, Mezo proved to be a hero of great sincerity, showing empathy and understanding towards the suffering of heteromorph victims of discrimination. Refusing to give in to cynicism or selfishness, he was able to calm tensions and convince the crowd to renounce violence, showing his heroic integrity.
13. Koji Koda, quiet and kind courage
Like Mezo, Koji Koda often remains in the shadows of his comrades. His appearance and reserved personality make him an often underestimated student. However, he refuses to be marginalized or become a threat. Kind and very gentle, he channels his inner strength to face the heteromorphic crowd stirred up by Spinner.
Illustrating an introverted but determined temperament, he stands out in his battle with his Anivoice Quirk. His kindness towards animals and authenticity earn the silent respect of his colleagues.
12. Yuga Aoyama, a hero fully embracing his responsibilities
Long perceived as a frivolous and superficial student, Yuga Aoyama won fans' hearts during seasons 6 and 7, entering the top 10 most appreciated students of Class 1-A. Behind his vain appearance and oddities hides a generous and loyal young man.
From an influential family, he was born without a Quirk but his parents made a pact with All For One, allowing him to obtain the Belly Button Laser Quirk. Despite this secret and his complicated past, Aoyama shows real empathy, especially towards Deku who shares his experience of being born Quirkless. Although he made mistakes that harmed his group, he is now consumed by guilt and has done everything to redeem himself.
11. Eijiro Kirishima, the manly, sincere, and confident hero
Without extravagance or pretense, Eijiro Kirishima stands out thanks to his healthy masculinity and fighting spirit. Initially complexed by his "monolithic Quirk," he was inspired by the hero Crimson Riot and encouraged by Mina Ashido, paving his own way.
His development made him a strong and likable male symbol, in contrast to Bakugo's explosive temperament. Kirishima gained fans' trust after brilliantly supporting Fat Gum during the fight against two members of Overhaul's Eight Bullets.
10. Mina Ashido, the bubbly and dynamic girl with dancing moves
Mina Ashido is undoubtedly the bubbly and joyful figure of Class 1-A, whose presence has shone since her debut. Despite mediocre academic results, she skillfully combines dance and her acid Quirk to become an agile and skillful heroine, notably revealed during the sports festival tournament.
Her carefree and friendly character makes her a valuable ally, effectively supporting her comrades. Mina constantly improves in strength and endurance, becoming a promising professional hero. Her humor and natural charm ensure her a prime place among the most appreciated students, even if some characters receive more extensive writing.
9. Tenya Iida, the serious and responsible older brother of the class
Younger son of the pro hero Ingenium, Tenya Iida takes his role as big brother and model student very seriously in Class 1-A. Outgoing but disciplined, he likes to embody a leader capable of motivating his teammates and getting the best out of them, although his occasional rigidity sometimes earns him criticism.
His devotion, unwavering motivation, and exemplary courage, especially when overcoming limits despite pain, make him a pillar of the class and a respected young hero.
8. Kyoka Jiro, the authentic and passionate punk rock girl
Often underestimated, Kyoka Jiro offers subtle and believable development. A music lover, she hid her true punk rock face out of shyness before her friends pushed her to fully assert herself.
Her leadership during the school festival as the rock band leader of the class marks a strong moment in her journey and shows her determination.
7. Fumikage Tokoyami, a young hero with chunibyo style and a fearsome Quirk
Fumikage Tokoyami may seem a bit eccentric due to his chunibyo airs, but he takes his hero training very seriously. Behind this dramatic side, he shows great humility and generosity, particularly notable given the impressive power of his Dark Shadow Quirk.
This exceptionally talented native constantly trains, notably facing his Dark Shadow Quirk in extreme conditions and collaborating with Hawks to perfect his techniques. He has become an essential element in the joint training arc, even if he suffers setbacks like Kinoko's surprise attack.
6. Tsuyu Asui, the responsible and thoughtful big sister
Tsuyu Asui, nicknamed Froppy, has risen among the most appreciated students of Class 1-A. Her popularity rests on her positioning as a caring big sister, influenced by family responsibilities.
Gifted with sharp intelligence, a calm and rational character, she often acts as the voice of reason in the group. Very attached to her friends, she does not hesitate to express her emotions, as seen during Bakugo’s rescue mission where she cried. Her frog-themed costume, natural grace, and particular humor make her very dear to fans.
5. Momo Yaoyorozu, the passionate heroine with great potential
Momo Yaoyorozu could have fallen into the stereotype of the rich and authoritative girl, but she stays away with humility and kindness, treating all her comrades equally. This wisdom allowed her to understand she had to embody the Plus Ultra philosophy, relying neither on her Quirk nor her school performances to succeed.
Her development, marked by a struggle against complacency and doubt, symbolizes progress possible through hard work, placing her among the most respected and promising students of Class 1-A.
4. Katsuki Bakugo, a complex evolution towards redemption and friendship
Analyzing Katsuki Bakugo, Deku's historic rival, is complex due to his many nuances. Initially bullying and contemptuous of Deku’s lack of a Quirk, Bakugo long embodied an intense antagonist, even after Deku acquired One For All.
However, Bakugo harbors a deep attachment to Deku, going as far as enduring serious injuries to protect him. Their cooperation against Nine and his accomplices, as well as his sincere apologies in season 6, sealed their reconciliation and revealed his true face—an unrivaled master of explosions with a nuanced personality.
3. Ochaco Uraraka, a heroine motivated by family love
Ochaco Uraraka quickly became an essential close friend of Deku at the university, welcoming him from their first encounters. She is one of his most loyal allies, striving to imitate his bravery and strength while developing her own qualities. She also built strong bonds with Tsuyu and Mina, strengthening group cohesion.
Her Quirk, though modest, places her as an endearing underdog. From a family with limited resources, her ultimate goal is to succeed as a professional hero to provide a better life for her parents, which touches fans deeply.
2. Shoto Todoroki, an independent hero forged by a difficult past
Viewers quickly discover that Shoto Todoroki is not just a cold and distant rival of Deku but the product of an exceptional Quirk marriage and a painful family past. Designed to surpass All Might, he seeks to carve his own path as an independent hero, away from his father Endeavor's influence.
Despite trauma, he refuses to fall into darkness and cultivates strong friendly relationships with his comrades. His sincere rapprochement with his father, marked by a desire to give him a second chance, testifies to his nobility of spirit and enriches his complexity.
1. Izuku Midoriya, the big-hearted hero going from nothing to legend
At the top of this ranking is of course Izuku Midoriya, aka Deku, the undisputed protagonist and the best student of Class 1-A in many aspects. His generous character, having started without a Quirk but dreaming big, embodies the quintessence of a shonen hero. His aspiration to become a symbol of peace, following in All Might’s footsteps, shows admirable determination.
Deku stands out with his tactical intelligence, remarkable courage, and an idealistic temperament often highlighted with a touch of humor. This rare combination makes him a well-rounded professional hero, appreciated for his thoughtful fighting style. He shows a refreshing balance, proving that a shonen hero can combine raw power and great strategic intelligence.
