Characteristics and personality
Tao Pai Pai is unanimously recognized as the world’s best assassin and hitman, with over twenty years of experience. An expert in martial arts, he eliminates General Blue with a simple lick, illustrating his extraordinary power, capable of impressing even the revered Muten Rōshi.
Like his brother Tsuru Sennin, Tao Pai Pai stands out for his coldness and total lack of compromise. His ruthless behavior is notably shown during his harsh treatment of Ten Shin Han during their training past.
In his first confrontation, after General Blue, Tao Pai Pai quickly imposes himself as one of Son Goku’s most formidable opponents. He coldly eliminates Blue, inflicting the hero’s first true defeat in an intense duel, heralding a darker and more mature evolution of the series, especially with the arrival of Piccolo Daimao.
However, despite his menacing aura, the story confronts him with a notable humiliation when Son Goku, after leaving Karin Tower, easily dominates him. Later, Tao Pai Pai is found in a less threatening role, notably during the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai.
Biography
Origins
Born in year 459, two years before the appearance of Piccolo Daimao, Tao Pai Pai quickly surpasses his brother Tsuru Sennin in martial skills, fueling a constant rivalry between them, sometimes for trivial reasons such as sharing a bowl of rice.
Tao begins his career as a hitman while maintaining family ties, notably helping his brother to train students like Ten Shin Han and Chaozu at the Crane School.
During a trip, he kills a martial arts master after an insult in a bar, seriously injuring Mister Satan in retaliation.
Dragon Ball: role in the Red Ribbon Army Saga
Hired by the Red Ribbon Army to recover the Dragon Balls and eliminate Son Goku, Tao Pai Pai makes his first appearance accompanied by Colonel Black at headquarters, where they meet General Red. After Blue’s defeat against Goku, the latter gets one last chance to face Tao Pai Pai, who kills him very quickly by stabbing his tongue into his temple.
This demonstration of strength is meant to test Tao Pai Pai’s true potential, who then heads to the Sacred Land to continue his mission to eliminate Goku. He mercilessly kills Bora, Upa’s father, protector of the hero. Goku then attempts a desperate fight against him but is beaten and left for dead.
After recovering the Dragon Balls, Tao Pai Pai has new clothes made in a small town, his clothes having been destroyed during the fight against Goku. Informed by General Red that he forgot one crystal ball, Tao Pai Pai promises to come back once his outfit is finished.
He kills the stubborn tailor, then attempts to eliminate Upa in the Sacred Land, but Goku intervenes. A new fight begins in which the hero soon takes the upper hand. In search of strength, Tao Pai Pai climbs to Karin Tower to drink the holy water but loses control of his flying cloud, causing a brutal fall.
During the final confrontation, Goku dominates. Tao Pai Pai makes one last attempt by drawing a grenade, but Goku turns it against him, causing his elimination in the explosion.
23rd Tenka Ichi Budokai Saga
Contrary to all expectations, Tao Pai Pai reappears as a cyborg, allied with his brother Tsuru Sennin, and participates in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, seeking revenge on Goku and his former disciples Ten Shin Han and Chaozu. Brutal towards Chaozu during the qualifiers, he faces Ten Shin Han in the quarterfinals. Despite cheating using weapons, he is ultimately defeated and taken out of the stadium by his brother.
Dragon Ball Z: secondary role and appearances
At the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, Tao Pai Pai is hired as a bodyguard for a con artist named Bourbon but is defeated by Son Gohan. Later, during the Dragon Ball quest, he is finally forced to yield to Son Goku, sealing his definitive defeat.
Appearances in movies
Movie 03: Dragon Ball - The Great Mystical Adventure
In this movie, Tao Pai Pai reprises his role as a hitman and acts in support of his brother Tsuru Sennin. Using the powers of Emperor Chaozu, he relentlessly pursues his objectives. During a tournament organized by the Miffan people, he fights and tortures Bora before being seriously injured by a statue near the ring.
Facing Son Goku, Tao Pai Pai is surprised by the power of the Dodompa. He reacts nonetheless and fights the hero again, this time accompanied by Arale Norimaki and the Gatchaman, making the fight much more complex.
