Physical Appearance
Sung Il-Hwan is an imposing man with an athletic build, well-defined muscles, piercing gray eyes, and messy black hair. When activating his powers or in anger, his eyes glow with an intense bright yellow. Despite spending a decade trapped in dungeons, his youth remains remarkably preserved, as noted by Hwang Dongsoo, and time seems to barely affect him.
During his escape, he wears a worn brown cloak over a torn white shirt, bandages wrapped around his hands, loose black pants, and sturdy boots. Before his disappearance, he appeared more polished, dressed in a plain brown jacket over a classic black t-shirt.
Personality
Il-Hwan embodies an extremely protective father, willing to do anything to defend his family. He did not hesitate to confront Hwang Dongsoo when he tried without cause to harm his son Jinwoo. Despite his ferocity, Il-Hwan shows great compassion, sparing his enemies when possible and protecting innocents caught in conflicts, demonstrating a rare balance between strength and mercy.
History and Role
In his youth, Il-Hwan worked as a firefighter, where he met and married Park Kyung-Hye. Together they had two beloved children, Jinwoo and Jinah. With the revelation of the magical beast world, Il-Hwan left his career to become an S-Rank hunter, one of Korea’s first. Due to lack of a ranking system at the time, his exceptional strength remained unknown to the general public, preventing him from enjoying privileges current hunters have.
Trapped in a dungeon ten years before the main events, Il-Hwan was presumed dead by his family. Near starvation and dehydration, he was found by mysterious Rulers who granted him supernatural powers to neutralize the future Shadow Monarch—his own son, Jinwoo. With no way out, Il-Hwan accepted this painful mission, brutally separated from his family.

Demon Castle Arc
After Ashborn chose Jinwoo as his host, Il-Hwan gained the Rulers’ permission to return temporarily to the human world to continue his mission. In the USA, he encountered a group of A-rank hunters who attacked him as a threat. Il-Hwan easily overwhelmed their assaults. Confronted by the Hunters’ Federal Bureau and interrogated by Hwang Dongsoo—who bore an old grudge—the situation escalated into a fight where Il-Hwan destroyed the Bureau’s HQ and fled, warning Hwang never to return to Korea.
Ahjin Guild Arc
Deliberately drawing Sillad’s attention with his mana signature in the USA, Il-Hwan engaged in intense combat with him. Though overpowered, he survived a massive energy explosion; his fate afterwards remains unknown.
Japanese Crisis Arc
Learning his target was in Tokyo, Il-Hwan went there to fulfill his mission. He discovered the true identity of the Shadow Monarch: his own son, Jinwoo. Refusing to kill him, Il-Hwan convinced the Rulers to reconsider, who then entrusted them with the task of protecting Jinwoo—a mission he accepted with gratitude and pride.
International Guild Conference Arc
An investigation into Christopher Reed’s murder revealed mana similar to Il-Hwan’s, making him the prime suspect. A red notice was issued, revealing to Jinwoo that his father was indeed alive.
Monarchs’ War Arc
During the attack of three Monarchs on Seoul, Il-Hwan came to Jinwoo’s aid. He single-handedly defeated the terrifying Querehsha, then fiercely fought Rakan and Sillad. Seriously wounded, he saved Jinwoo from a fatal blow before nearly dying himself. Beru saved him at the last moment by breaking an ice meteorite. Jinwoo returned stronger to defeat their foes. Exhausted, Il-Hwan shared an emotional moment with his son before his body dissolved in a bright light.

Epilogue
Thanks to the latest use of the Reincarnation Cup by the Rulers, a new timeline was created in which the existence of magical creatures is ignored by humanity. In this world, Il-Hwan retained his life as a firefighter without becoming a hunter. Later, he recovered all his past memories but chose to erase them to live peacefully with his family, free from his former torments.
Exceptional Abilities
Sung Il-Hwan, as a Sovereign, was among the world’s most powerful hunters, second only to his son Jinwoo. However, his frail body could not withstand the magnitude of the powers bestowed upon him, leading to his death after a brutal fight with Sillad and Rakan.
- Superhuman strength: Easily overpowered Hwang Dongsoo and threw Rakan through several buildings with phenomenal force.
- Exceptional speed: Extraordinary agility and speed allowing him to dodge and counter multiple dangerous opponents simultaneously.
- Stealth mastery: Ability to blend into shadows, becoming almost invisible physically and magically.
- Sovereign powers: Powerful telekinesis that lets him manipulate and move objects at a distance with ease.
