Perona from One Piece

Perona from One Piece

Perona, nicknamed the "Ghost Princess," mistress of the Zombie Animals and key figure of the Thriller Bark arc

Perona established herself as a key antagonist during the Thriller Bark arc, where she led the Zombie Animals army and orchestrated the ambush against the Straw Hat crew. A prominent member of the Mysterious Quartet alongside Doctor Hogback, Absalom, and Gecko Moria, she left a strong impression with her terrifying powers and strategic role before Moria’s defeat.

After a two-year timeskip, Perona became a valuable ally of the Straw Hat crew, notably helping Roronoa Zoro on Dracule Mihawk’s island, facilitating their escape from the Sabaody Archipelago.

Appearance

In childhood, Perona had a look very close to her adult self: same umbrella, crown adorned with spikes, and characteristic hairstyle. She wore a simple pink dress with a small black bow at the collar and red boots, always accompanied by her faithful teddy bear Kumaé—a childlike counterpart to Kumacy. A key flashback from ten years ago shows an even younger Perona, with her crown still visible.

Before the Timeskip

Before the timeskip, Perona displayed a remarkable gothic lolita style: large black eyes marked by long lower lashes, often inwardly turned feet, and a color palette mixing black, dark red, and white. Her long pink hair was tied in twin tails with black and white elastics, topped with a spiked crown and cross. Her outfit included a mini-skirt, tights, red boots, and an umbrella with dark patterns. Bold makeup featured bright lipstick and pronounced eyeliner.

After the Timeskip

Two years later, at the Sabaody Archipelago, she adopts a more mature and sophisticated look: a long black and white strapless dress, heeled boots, a top hat decorated with a crown of white flowers; a bat-shaped tattoo marks her left forearm, accompanied by a watch and pink polished nails. Her hair evolves into multiple spiral braids at the back of her head. Upon meeting Mihawk, she wears a straw hat, white shirt, loose black tie, and black floral skirt, always accompanied by her teddy bear and watch.

Personality

Perona is confident in the power of her Devil Fruit and often surprised when her attacks fail, such as against Usopp. She quickly grows irritated by disobedience and dislikes being contradicted but remains extremely loyal to Gecko Moria, whom she views as a father figure. Her sadness at Moria’s presumed disappearance evidences this deep bond, even if her instinct once compelled her to flee Thriller Bark when she thought Oars wanted her dead.

Her tone contrasts with her appearance, characterized by a masculine voice and sometimes childish behavior. Before the timeskip, she was capricious and hot-tempered, maturing thereafter but retaining some childlike traits, like affection for her teddy bear. Despite her teasing nature, Perona can be kind and encouraging, even toward rivals.

She is interested only in "cute" beings and wishes to transform all her zombie animals into adorable, loyal servants. She hated Kumacy’s unpleasant voice, forbidding him from speaking, but still deeply cared for him, especially after Usopp purified him.

One Piece: Does Perona's Power Negate Haki?

Perona notably fears cockroaches, even panicking at plastic models, and her gullibility sometimes makes her naive, such as when believing Usopp’s illusions.

Characteristic Laugh

Her distinctive laugh is based on her Devil Fruit: “Horo-horo-horo-horo-horo!”, a spectral sound perfectly mirroring her ghostly aura.

Relationships

Main Allies

  • Roronoa Zoro: After meeting on Kuraigana, Perona healed Zoro and built a trusting relationship during their stay on Mihawk’s island. She played a crucial role in their escape from the Sabaody Archipelago against the Marines.
  • Gecko Moria: Seen as a father figure, Perona was raised by the formidable pirate. Despite her attachment, she showed independence several times, sometimes wishing to leave Thriller Bark.
  • Kumacy: Her teddy bear and ambiguous companion, cherished yet strictly controlled due to his voice which she finds unbearable.
  • Mihawk: Their relationship is unique, with Perona residing in his domain on Thriller Bark. Together, they watched over Zoro. During the Wano arc, Mihawk is protective of Perona, showing genuine affection despite their quarrels.

Enemies

Originally, Perona was fiercely opposed to the Straw Hat crew, especially Usopp. Later, after the timeskip, she became an ally by facilitating their escape from the Marines and providing strategic information.

Thriller Bark Arc
Perona first appeared spectrally, spying on the Straw Hats before their arrival. As an important member of the Mysterious Quartet, she monitored, informed, and commanded her zombies. Her confrontation with Usopp was marked by unexpected resistance that surprised her.

Who is Perona in One Piece?

She used her ghosts to capture enemies and dreamed of a kingdom full of adorable zombies. Frustrated by Usopp’s persistence, she fled to save herself, revealing the complexity between her power and vulnerability.

During the arc, she endured several crises, including Oars’ attacks, recovered the island’s treasure, and prepared her escape. Defeated by Usopp’s ingenious strategies combining Impact Dial and inflatable weapons, she unexpectedly left the scene.

Timeskip
Sent by Kuma to Kuraigana, Perona healed Zoro and, initially manipulative, ultimately became a precious ally guiding Zoro toward freedom. She also learned from Mihawk that a Moria was still alive.

Return to Sabaody Arc
Two years later, Perona helped the Straw Hats evade the Marines and informed them of looming dangers. During the Wano arc, she learned Moria was alive; she sought to find him but Mihawk held her back, concerned for her safety.

Egghead Island Arc
She located Moria’s detention in the Hive and proposed a trade to Koby for his release.

Differences Between Manga and Anime

  • In the manga, Perona foams at the mouth when knocked out by Usopp, a detail absent in the anime.
  • Her character is more childlike and solitary in the anime, with additional interactions, notably with Zoro.
  • The manga shows some inconsistency in her physical interaction in ghost form, an aspect expanded and changed in the anime.
  • The anime includes extensions such as her exchanges with Sanji and attacks on the Marines.
