Origins and History of the Monarchs
At the dawn of the universe, when only light and darkness reigned, the Absolute Being distributed the light to create the Sovereigns and generated the Monarchs of darkness, born to destroy. These two powerful races then plunged into a devastating and merciless millennial war.
After the tragic disappearance of the Absolute Being, the Rulers emerged as holders of fragments of the original power. They relentlessly hunted the Monarchs, notably capturing the formidable Monarch Legia, a decisive strategic victory for them.
Facing the growing threat of the Rulers, Ashborn, the Shadow Monarch, took the initiative to unite the surviving Monarchs in a fragile but necessary alliance.
Despite his formidable strength, Ashborn was betrayed by two ambitious Monarchs, Rakan and Baran, who set an ambush. Though he defeated them, this battle seriously weakened his forces, forcing a strategic retreat. Taking advantage of the situation, Antarès, the most powerful Monarch, sided with him, supporting a still-crippled army.
Centuries later, the Monarchs launched a coordinated offensive against the human world to restore their power but were stopped by the Rulers, who used the mystical artifact called the Reincarnation Cup to travel through time multiple times. Despite their efforts, the fate of this conflict seemed sealed across all possible timelines.
Jeju Island Arc
Following the appearance of an S-Rank Gate on Jeju Island, Rakan detected powerful signatures linked to the Shadow Monarch and, accompanied by Sillad, realized the war against the Rulers needed to resume intensely.
Japanese Crisis Arc
Months later, the Rulers opened an S-Rank Gate in Tokyo, giving Legia an opportunity to escape. However, he was quickly eliminated by Sung Jinwoo, the new bearer of the Shadow Monarch. Simultaneously, the Monarchs intensified their hunt and assassinated Christopher Reed, an exceptional American hunter and vessel of the Rulers.
International Guild Conference Arc
Approaching the prestigious conference, the Monarchs eliminated Jonas, Brazil’s strongest hunter and vessel of the Rulers, marking an escalation in their actions.
Monarchs’ War Arc
On the conference's last day, Sillad assassinated Go Gunhee, Korea’s second strongest hunter and vessel of the Rulers. After the revelation that the Shadow Monarch had turned against them by incarnating as Sung Jinwoo, the Monarchs were divided: some wanted to quickly eliminate Jinwoo while others preferred to wait for Antarès’ return.
Thus, three Monarchs advanced on Seoul, determined to eliminate Jinwoo. They defeated Thomas André and caused Jinwoo’s temporary death, savagely resurrected by Sung Il-Hwan who then fully unleashed the Shadow Monarch’s powers. The invaders were swiftly annihilated by the latter.
Final Battle Arc
After catastrophic losses, Antarès discovered through Yogumunt the betrayal of the Shadow Monarch. Despite the suffered losses, he gathered his brothers and their armies for a final offensive. Invading the human world through a massive gate in Canada, they spread destruction, unaware that Jinwoo had already prepared their counterattack.
The fight culminated on a remote island in Japan: Antarès initially dominated but was ultimately surprised by the intervention of the Rulers who instantly killed him, ending the war.
Epilogue
After the Rulers used the Reincarnation Cup on Jinwoo’s order, all Monarchs except Baran were resurrected with their memories intact. Jinwoo then triggered a series of eliminations over 27 years, leading to his final victory.
Key Strengths of the Monarchs
Born directly from the Absolute Being, the Monarchs represent one of the most powerful life forms in the universe, surpassed only by the gods themselves. Their skill and experience make them nearly invincible against the best S-Rank Hunters and even the most fearsome National Hunters. Each Monarch commands an army of millions of devoted soldiers.
All possess the formidable ability of Spirit Body Manifestation, allowing them to reveal their true form and unleash their maximum power. They also master the opening of portals, enabling instantaneous travel across vast distances or even between different worlds.
Weaknesses of the Monarchs
Composed essentially of mana and lacking organic physical bodies, Monarchs cannot freely interact in the human world without an appropriate human host, just like the Rulers. However, unlike the latter who partially coexist with their hosts, Monarchs fully possess theirs. This critical dependence means destroying their human vessel results in their own annihilation.
Succession System
According to revelations from Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, a Monarch’s death opens the path to succession, carried out by a magical creature designated by the Absolute Being or by a faithful priest. Since the disappearance of the Absolute Being, this role has fallen to devoted priests.
To claim succession, the candidate must face the legendary eight-headed serpent Nidhogg and sever at least one head—a near-impossible challenge without powerful support, as demonstrated by Esil aided by Suho during Baran’s succession.
