Physical Appearance

Byung-Gyu was distinguished by his slender figure and somewhat frail appearance. He sported spiky black hair, radiant clear skin, and deep black eyes reflecting his determination. At his first appearance, he wore an elegant black coat over a white shirt paired with dark pants, combining sobriety and seriousness.

During the fourth raid on Jeju Island, his look changed to better suit the circumstances: he wore robust blue-black armor, a gray hoodie, a grimoire tied to his right waist symbolizing his knowledge, and wielded a mace with brown-golden reflections, ready for combat if necessary.

In his spectral shadow form, Byung-Gyu changed radically: his skin turned a bright blue hue, a tattered black hooded cloak enveloped his body, his eyes became completely white and expressionless, and he wielded a teal-blue grimoire in his right hand, symbolizing his powerful magical abilities.

Personality

Byung-Gyu was recognized for his deeply human nature: friendly, compassionate, and resolutely pacifist. He rejected violence in all its forms, preferring to withdraw from combat to embrace a more peaceful life. His dream was to live a normal civilian life as a Korean history teacher, a wish he seriously considered before the events on Jeju Island pushed him back into battle.

Despite his aversion to war, his sense of duty and loyalty to his colleagues motivated him to voluntarily participate in the fourth raid, proving his courage and responsibility toward collective safety.

History

Japanese Crisis Arc

Although in perfect health, Byung-Gyu chose early retirement, driven by the tragic consequences of repeated raids on Jeju Island. The tragic loss of Eunseok, one of his close companions, deeply marked him. One year before the grim Double Dungeon incident, he participated in the third raid alongside Eunseok and Baek Yoonho. This bitter failure and Eunseok’s death left an indelible scar, pushing him to seek another path.

Demon Castle Return Arc

At Japan’s urgent request, Byung-Gyu was dispatched to offer his expertise and advise on the Jeju raids. He observed with concern that the dungeon ants were evolving rapidly, notably developing wings that could potentially destabilize neighboring countries. Informed and vigilant, he alerted Baek Yoonho of this new imminent threat.

Days before the start of the fourth raid, he firmly conveyed to Baek his intention to definitively retire from hunting to pursue his career as a history teacher, categorically stating he would no longer return to the cursed island.

Jeju Island Arc

Despite his resolution, Byung-Gyu was ultimately persuaded to join the fourth raid, accompanied by a determined team. True to his skills, he provided vital support to his allies by granting indispensable bonuses and efficiently healing their wounds.

After the Queen Ant’s defeat, the situation turned tragic when the Ant King launched a violent assault, severely injuring each hunter. Byung-Gyu then activated his unique skill, Disguise, to quickly heal his allies. Unfortunately, this maneuver left him vulnerable: spotted, he was attacked from behind, screaming at Baek to flee before succumbing to his wounds and being absorbed by the Ant King.

Following the death of the Ant King, Sung Jinwoo used his shadow power to temporarily resurrect Byung-Gyu, allowing him to provide vital healing to the severely injured Cha Hae-In. After completing this crucial mission, Jinwoo honored Baek’s request to finally let Byung-Gyu rest in peace, ending his existence as a shadow and enabling his soul to find the well-deserved rest.

Ahjin Guild Arc

Soon after the fourth raid, Cha Hae-In was haunted by a vision in which Byung-Gyu’s spirit warned her about the mysterious growing powers of Jinwoo. From there, Cha Hae-In relayed this precious warning to Jinwoo, triggering his quest to seek the true origin of his gifts rather than simply intensify his power.

Ragnarök

Thanks to the spectacular time-reset event initiated by Jinwoo via the Reincarnation Cup, Byung-Gyu’s death was erased from reality. In this new timeline, he resumed a normal life, becoming a history teacher before retraining as a doctor, marrying a woman named Oh Seonjoo. Although he lost memory of his past as a hunter, recurring nightmares where he saw himself assassinated by a giant ant troubled him.

Two years after the Great Cataclysm, Byung-Gyu, now in his sixties, worked as a doctor and evaluator within the Hunters Association. As the country’s only specialist in the study of stardust and its effects on the human body, he conducted advanced research.

During an evaluation session of Suho, a powerful monster named Beru was summoned. Facing this creature, Byung-Gyu almost panicked, but to his surprise, Beru recognized the doctor, sensing a quasi-filial bond, and even assured him protection.

Solo Leveling: What Happens to Byung-Gyu on Jeju Island?

Although Byung-Gyu could no longer fully access his S-Rank healer powers, now integrated into his essence, his blessing nevertheless allowed him to awaken as a C-Rank healer. True to himself, he refused to rejoin a guild or become a hunter again, preferring to devote his time to fundamental research on stardust.

Remarkable Abilities

As an S-Rank healer, Byung-Gyu had exceptional mastery of healing magic, capable of instantly healing severe wounds where most would fail. He also claimed to possess skills worthy of an A-rank fighter, demonstrating his versatile talents on the battlefield.

  • Healing Magic: Byung-Gyu could quickly restore his allies, as shown by the healing provided to Baek Yoonho and Ma Dongwook after severe poisoning, or even his ability to regrow Ma’s severed limbs. His magic even saved Cha Hae-In when she was on the brink of death, an achievement beyond the reach of conventional potions and Jinwoo’s usual healing.
  • Buff Magic: Thanks to an enchanted grimoire, he temporarily enhanced his companions’ physical and magical stats, increasing their combat efficiency and chances of survival.
  • Disguise: A unique skill allowing him to perfectly blend into his surroundings. Under this effect, he became invisible both physically and magically but could neither move nor act, making him extremely vulnerable if spotted.
