Unlike Monkey D. Luffy’s crew, Gol D. Roger's crew included a large number of members. Aboard the Oro Jackson sailed 32 canonical members along with two children. While most of these characters have names, only a few had a significant presence in the anime and the anime series. Among them, four apprentices play a crucial role in Luffy’s quest to become the next Pirate King. Moreover, although Douglas Bullet appears in the film One Piece: Stampede, he is not recognized as a canonical character, which makes his details less reliable.
The Pirate King, Gol D. Roger: the free soul of One Piece
Gol D. Roger, torchbearer of freedom and conqueror of the Grand Line
Before setting out in search of the legendary One Piece, Roger was already a feared pirate, having discovered Lodestar Island well before the God Valley arc. His respectful rivalry with two titans, Monkey D. Garp and Edward Newgate — better known as Whitebeard — forged intense and complex relationships. This friendship also granted him access to vital secrets, including the reading of the Road Poneglyphs, thanks to his bond with the valiant Kozuki Oden.
Despite an incurable disease that weakened him, Roger launched his great expedition towards Laugh Tale. There, he and his crew erupted into uncontrollable laughter upon uncovering the hidden mysteries. After his arrest, aware of his imminent end, Roger chose to dissolve his crew and voluntarily surrendered to the Marines. He entrusted Garp with the existence of his son, Portgas D. Ace, to ensure his protection. Finally, on the scaffold, he forever changed the world’s fate by sparking the Era of Great Piracy, inspiring everyone to seek the One Piece.
Silvers Rayleigh: The Dark King and Luffy’s mentor
The legendary right-hand man of Gol D. Roger guiding the new generation
The second iconic figure of the crew, Rayleigh lived a peaceful retirement after the events that shook piracy. Long reluctant, he was finally convinced to join Roger’s crew, embodying the unrivaled right hand of the Pirate King. Deeply affected by his captain’s disappearance, he nonetheless built a quiet life, living with his wife Shakuyaku and working as a mechanic on the Sabaody Archipelago.
Rayleigh sometimes lets himself be captured voluntarily to evade surveillance and provide valuable assistance to the Straw Hat crew. Luffy, whom Shanks spoke of, became his student and a constant inspiration. Even without plans to take to the sea again, Rayleigh remains an extraordinary strategic support for the new pirate era.

Scopper Gaban, the "Mountain Eater" of the Pirate King
Gaban retires to Elbaf for a peaceful family life
A key figure from the past, Scopper Gaban was the left hand and a faithful companion of the Pirate King. He currently lives peacefully in Elbaf, the land of giants, surrounded by his family. Partnered with the giant Ripley and father to their child Colon, he travels the world and reconnects with former Roger Pirates members. His loyalty and power remain intact, always ready to defend his loved ones with his two powerful axes.
Gaban, nicknamed "Mountain Eater" for his legendary exploits, notably during fights where he protected an injured Roger, is renowned for his impressive strength. Even in his advanced age, he remains a formidable fighter capable of taking down opponents with feared efficiency.
Crocus, the guardian and doctor of the Pirate King
Crocus, the discreet hero of Reverse Mountain lighthouse
Before joining piracy, Crocus guarded the legendary lighthouse of Reverse Mountain. During this time, he befriended the Rumbar Pirates and the whale Laboon. He made a solemn promise to watch over the latter, a commitment he still honors today, long after the dissolution of Roger’s crew.
An exceptional doctor, Crocus was crucial in easing the sufferings of the declining captain. After Roger’s death, he returned to his lighthouse, remaining the vigilant guardian of Laboon, even digging tunnels inside the whale to provide care. After meeting the Straw Hat crew, he continues to hope their dreams will be fulfilled.
Kozuki Oden, the rebellious shogun of Wano
Oden, a charismatic figure of the Kuri region and ally of Roger
Kozuki Oden embodies strength, courage, and rebellion. Despite being dethroned by his father, he was respected as the undisputed leader of Kuri, on Wano’s island, where he brought peace after a troubled period. Despite his attachment to his homeland, he chose to join the ranks of the Whitebeard Pirates and later Roger’s crew.
During their first meeting, Oden passionately challenged Roger, yet bowed before his authority. Fascinated by Oden’s ability to decipher the Poneglyphs, Roger allowed him to board with his family. Oden also engraved a crucial message on the Golden Bell of the Shandoran Belfry. After discovering Laugh Tale, he returned to Wano where he confronted the schemes of Kurozumi Orochi and Kaido, ultimately sacrificing his life to save his people.
Kozuki Toki, the prophetess from the Lost Century
The time traveler and beacon of hope for Wano
Kozuki Toki, born more than 800 years ago, was gifted the Time Devil Fruit allowing her to project into the future. Saved by Oden, she joined him and their children within Roger’s crew. Unfortunately, ill, she couldn’t reach Laugh Tale and returned to Wano, where she became a light of hope against Orochi’s tyranny.
After the loss of Oden and the fierce struggles of the Nine Red Scabbards, Toki used her power to send their retainers into the future with Kozuki Momonosuke and entrusted Kozuki Hiyori to Kawamatsu. She publicly announced Wano’s imminent liberation within 20 years before being assassinated.
Shanks, the Red-Haired Emperor and faithful disciple of Gol D. Roger
The most famous apprentice of the Pirate King and founder of a new era
Shanks is probably the best-known apprentice of Roger. Discovered during the God Valley incident, he was taken in by the crew and raised among legendary pirates. Involved in all major actions of the Roger Pirates, he couldn’t accompany the group on the final conquest of Laugh Tale, held back by Buggy’s illness.
Present in Loguetown during Roger’s execution, Shanks spent over a decade in East Blue building his own crew, recruiting and gaining strength. He is famous for having stolen the Gum Gum Fruit, which became Luffy’s iconic power. Becoming one of the youngest and most powerful Emperors of the Grand Line, he is also nicknamed the “Wandering Emperor” and maintains enigmatic ties with the Celestial Dragons.
Currently active in the New World, he relentlessly pursues his ultimate quest: to seize the mythical One Piece.

Buggy, the star-clown turned Emperor
An unlikely pirate with a meteoric rise
Buggy entered One Piece as a relatively weak pirate motivated primarily by treasure hunting. However, his rise is remarkable as he gradually gains influence and power. His inclusion among the Roger Pirates remains mysterious, but he was already part of the crew at a young age.
Fearful in battles, he nonetheless made his mark by participating in many historic events. Stricken by a serious illness just before arriving at Laugh Tale, he did not partake in the conquest of the last island. Later, he was imprisoned in Impel Down after a failed attempt to execute Luffy instead of Roger.
After the dissolution of the Shichibukai, Buggy became an Emperor, heading the Cross Guild. He now aims to lead this organization towards the conquest of the One Piece, directly rivaling Shanks, once his ally.
Duke Inuarashi, loyal daimyo of Kuri
The former ruler of Day on Zou and faithful ally of Oden
Inuarashi once ruled the Day Kingdom on Zou island. As a child, he joined Oden along with his friend Nekomamushi, accompanying their master to the Whitebeard Pirates, then to Roger’s crew. Though he did not discover Laugh Tale, he returned to Wano with Toki and the children to confront Orochi’s forces.
Following the fall of Toki, Inuarashi returned to Zou, where he resisted Jack’s invasion, commanding the Minks troops. Alongside the Straw Hat Pirates, he took part in the decisive raid on Onigashima despite serious injuries. Now retired from politics, he watches over his people as daimyo of Kuri within Wano.
Master Nekomamushi, ruler of the night of Zou
Companion and rival of Inuarashi, loyal guardian of the Kozuki legacy
Nekomamushi, childhood friend of Inuarashi, left Zou following an agreement with the Kozuki family. He followed Oden in his adventures, participating in both the crews of Whitebeard and Roger. Upon Toki’s return to Wano, Nekomamushi stayed by her side to support the new generation.
Since their return to Zou, the rivalry between Inuarashi and Nekomamushi has sometimes strained their relationship. After fighting during the Onigashima raid and facing Admiral Ryokugyu, Nekomamushi continues to protect Wano, although he has renounced official titles.
