Physical Appearance
Hwang Dongsoo stands out with an imposing silhouette, robust and well-muscled. His short black crew-cut hairstyle accentuates his severe and penetrating gaze. When enraged or unleashing his overwhelming powers, his eyes blaze bright red, a clear expression of his intense inner strength. During his stay in Korean territory, he favors a simple yet striking look: a bright red t-shirt paired with sober gray jeans, adorned only by a gold chain symbolizing his distinctive style. In darker scenes, notably when torturing Jinho, his appearance becomes more threatening and aggressive. He then wears black pants, a tight red shirt, and a blue-gray jacket bearing a flaming skull emblem on the back, perfectly reflecting his violent and ruthless nature.
Personality and Character
Hwang Dongsoo exhibits a complex and highly controversial personality. He is characterized by an oversized ego and unleashed brutality, often called an arrogant fool by his fellow hunters. His disdain for human life is almost total, embodying the classic archetype of a cruel, ruthless hunter dominated by blind confidence in his abilities. This overconfidence leads him to underestimate even the most powerful opponents, particularly Sung Il-Hwan and especially Sung Jinwoo, the latter being regarded as an exceptional and extraordinary force. His cruelty also extends to his own circle, where he exerts violent domination, a direct influence of his equally relentless older brother’s temperament.
However, despite this odious nature, Hwang Dongsoo shows deep respect for true power. This humility was evident when he had to submit to the overwhelming and violent demonstration of Thomas Andre. Moreover, he possesses some strategic sense, as shown by his premeditated kidnapping of Jinho, betting on a timely intervention by Thomas to spare him from Jinwoo’s wrath. Nevertheless, his grave mistake was underestimating the combined power of Jinwoo and Thomas, a fatal choice that led to his disappearance, widely seen as a just conclusion to his arc.
Background and Story
Before the main storyline, Hwang Dongsoo was approached by Norma Selner, who offered him an attractive professional promotion. Without hesitation, he left Korea to settle in the United States, joining the prestigious Scavengers Guild led by Thomas Andre. This departure stirred strong resentment in Korea, where he was viewed as a traitor who abandoned his country in a frenzied quest for power and recognition. Even his older brother reproached him for this betrayal, judging him for forsaking his roots and values for personal interests.

Dungeon & Lizards Arc
Years after his defection, Hwang Dongsoo suffered a brutal shock: the sudden and unexpected death of his older brother during a raid gone wrong. Convinced that Jinwoo or Jinho, the only survivors of that raid, were responsible, he immediately returned to Korea with the sole objective of finding and punishing the guilty.
Red Gate Arc
Upon his arrival in Korea, he was welcomed by Woo Jinchul, sent by the Korean Guild to accompany him. Although surprised by this official reception, he firmly explained his intentions: to avenge his brother’s death at all costs, warning Jinchul not to interfere. Using his phone, he located Jinwoo via his hunter ID and ordered his swift capture.
Unfortunately, Hwang caught Jinwoo while the latter was in a dungeon called the Red Gate, formerly owned by the White Tiger Guild. Initially thinking Jinwoo was dead, he almost confronted Baek Yoonho, suspecting that Ahn Sangmin, one of his lieutenants, was hiding information from him. Eventually, aware of the risks of a scandal, he abandoned his mission and returned to the United States.
Demon Castle Arc
When tasked with interrogating Sung Il-Hwan, fresh out of a dungeon, Hwang demonstrated his linguistic skills by speaking fluent Korean, unlike Il-Hwan who did not know English. Tensions quickly rose during their exchange: Il-Hwan warned Hwang of an imminent danger, but the latter arrogantly responded that several powerful hunters were ready to fight him. Upon digging into Il-Hwan’s history, he discovered Il-Hwan was married and father to two children, including Sung Jinwoo. This revelation fueled his hatred, triggering a violent confrontation that left him seriously injured, fully aware of the deadly weight of Il-Hwan’s warnings: attacking his family would mean certain death.
Jeju Island Arc
Upon the announcement of a government raid on Jeju Island in Korea, Hwang requested to participate for the sake of his vengeance. His request was denied by the Korean Hunters Association, who anticipated his hostile intentions, thus forbidding him from joining the operation and forcing him to remain in the United States.
International Guild Conference Arc
When it was announced that Jinwoo would represent Korea at the International Guild Conference, Thomas Andre summoned Hwang to order him not to attack Jinwoo. Despite this directive, Hwang plotted personal revenge by kidnapping Jinho, intending to make him suffer. However, Jinwoo, thanks to his shadow powers, quickly located Hwang in an abandoned factory. An explosive battle broke out, with Hwang stubbornly refusing to back down against Jinwoo’s undeniable power.

Just as Jinwoo was about to end the fight, Thomas intervened, ordering Hwang to release Jinho. However, the merciless Jinwoo repelled Hwang, promising they would settle their score later. After defeating Thomas, Jinwoo killed Hwang and used his Shadow Extraction power to resurrect his spirit, now renamed Greed, who became a loyal servant ready to fight by his side.
Epilogue
After the Rulers’ final activation of the Reincarnation Cup, a new timeline was created in which humanity completely ignored the existence of magical creatures. In this alternate world, Hwang Dongsoo never became a hunter, thus escaping the premature death that awaited him in the original timeline where he perished at Jinwoo’s hands.
Ragnarök
Decades later, in this revised timeline, Hwang Dongsoo regained his former powers and rejoined the hunters’ ranks. However, quickly corrupted, he entered the service of the Itarim, which led Sung Il-Hwan to eliminate him once again while Suho, Jinwoo’s son, transformed him into a shadow soldier.
