Fern is a talented human mage from the Southern Lands. An orphan and war refugee, her childhood was marked by the loss of her family and great hardship. Rescued by the priest Heiter, she later became the faithful pupil and protege of Frieren after Heiter's death. Under Frieren’s mentorship, Fern follows a rigorous magical training, joining a close-knit group on a remarkable adventure.

Fern exhibits impressive maturity shaped by her traumatic past and strict upbringing. Within the group, she takes on an almost maternal role, attentively caring for Frieren, who tends to fall into deep sleep. Fern wakes her, ensures she eats properly, dresses her, and cleans up after small messes. She also watches over Stark with occasional firmness to curb his excesses, despite their similar age.
Yet beneath this responsible demeanor, Fern can reveal a more impulsive and childish side when upset or frustrated. Curious by nature, she often prefers to carefully observe before acting, such as when she discreetly followed Frieren to check her choices or investigated Stark to find a gift for him.
Distinctive physical appearance and characteristic outfits
Fern is distinguished by her long purple hair reaching nearly to her waist, with a fringe gently framing her face. Her violet eyes add a mysterious and bewitching aura. Her typical hairstyle is a hime cut with two side locks partially tied at chest level. She is taller and more slender than Frieren since age sixteen, with a serene expression reflecting her calm and composed temperament, shaped by her origin in the Southern Lands.
During her travels, she generally wears a long white buttoned dress with a Victorian-style ruffled collar and puffed sleeves, paired with black boots. In winter, she chooses a black hooded coat lined with grey. For her sixteenth birthday, Frieren gave her a butterfly brooch which she partly uses to hold her hair. At eighteen, Stark gifted her a lotus-mirror patterned bracelet which she wears on her left wrist.

Her magic shines in battles where she easily outmatches experienced mages with simple but effective spells, as shown in confrontations against Ehre. According to Falsch, she holds the best historical score on the third-class mage examination, a testament to her extraordinary talent. Her tutor Serie recognizes her unparalleled potential, confident she will reach great heights through sustained training.
Advanced mana concealment and detection mastery
To move stealthily, Fern excels in advanced mana concealment techniques, evading detection even from skilled mages and formidable demons. She once surprised the demon Lügner despite the vigilance of his aide Linie. Even Frieren acknowledges how difficult it is to locate Fern when she masks her energy. Her stealth mobility far surpasses Frieren’s, who must remain still to keep invisible.

While less experienced than Frieren in raw power, Fern compensates with remarkable incantation speed, quickly finishing fights. Against the demon Lügner, she withstood attrition attacks via rapid multiple strikes of Zoltraak.
