Appearance
Choi Jong-In appears as a slender man with red hair styled in an elegant curtain, featuring a characteristic part on the left side of his right eye that gives him a piercing gaze. He often sports a welcoming and warm smile that contrasts with tense scenes. His clothing style is distinguished by striped suits that he frequently wears, adding a refined and polished touch to his silhouette.
During important missions and raids, Choi chooses a more imposing outfit: a golden brown suit mixed with bright white, accented by a flowing red cape symbolizing his rank and authority. He also wears eight distinctive rings, emblematic and mystical elements surely expressing his power and status.
In the revised timeline, his appearance remains generally faithful to the original version, although he appears more mature. He keeps his famous red cape but wears a full black suit and refined glasses, further reinforcing his image as a calm and composed expert and strategist.
Personality
Choi proves to be a cunning and skilled character, capable of keeping his cool in all circumstances. His clear-headedness and intelligence allow him to quickly and efficiently analyze different situations, even under extreme pressure, making him a major asset on the field.
Privately, he is known as a heavy smoker, often seen enjoying a quiet moment outside, a habit that highlights his somewhat gruff but endearing side.
In the revised timeline, Choi retains the same thoughtful and calm personality but shows new sensitivity, especially towards the motivations and choices of Sung Su-Ho. He questions the latter’s decision to remain discreet despite his willingness to help civilians, showing increased attention to the emotions and needs of the people they protect.
Abilities
Recognized as the most powerful mage in Korea, Choi Jong-In’s fire magic rivals that of Baek Yoonho. However, he is significantly less powerful than his talented lieutenant, Cha Hae-In, making him, despite his prestigious rank, one of the weaker S-rank hunters on the global stage.
- Fire Magic: Choi possesses exceptional mastery of fire, capable of unleashing devastating fires with phenomenal power. A single spell is enough to annihilate an entire building. His flames are so intense they can wipe out entire hordes of terrifying ants and burn groups of imposing ground giants. He perfectly controls temperature, shape, manipulation, and extinguishing of flames, although he cannot protect others from ignition.
- Exceptional Durability: Despite specializing in offensive magic, Choi shows impressive endurance, remaining clear-headed and mobile even after suffering serious injuries in a confrontation with the formidable Ant King.
- Increased Speed: His speed is noteworthy, allowing him to narrowly dodge formidable attacks, including thermal vision from powerful weapons like the Statue of God.
- Large Mana Reserve: His energy capacity is considerable, granting him the endurance to maintain intense firepower throughout the raid on Jeju Island. Among Korean hunters, only figures such as Jinwoo the Black Heart, Min Byung-Gyu, and a few other national hunters possess comparable or superior reserves.
- Flame Spear: Choi can create and launch several flaming spears at his opponents, formidable offensive weapons capable of piercing enemy defenses.
- Fire Resistance: As the undisputed master of fire, he is naturally immune to high temperatures and suffers no damage from his own flames.
- Flame Prison: He generates a large net or web of flames, which he can use both to attack and defend. This fire prison is powerful enough to neutralize magical creatures of B-rank, although the impact of size on the power of this attack remains to be determined.
- Flame Dragon: Choi shapes a swirling mass of fire into the form of a small incandescent dragon that incinerates those nearby, inflicting massive damage.
- Flame Arrow: He transforms his flames into a flaming bow and arrow, capable of launching a boss-ranked monster into the air with devastating force.
- Summoning Magic: In the revised timeline, Choi forged a pact with a fire elemental, represented as a majestic blazing blue bird that accompanies him and enhances his magical abilities.
Anecdotes
In the Japanese anime version, the character Choi Jong-In is renamed Shin Mogami.
Choi Jong-In is mentioned from the first chapter of the Solo Leveling webtoon, appearing in a conversation between Kim Sangshik and Park Beom-Shik.
He appears earlier in Solo Leveling Ragnarök than in the original novels or light novel.
In the revised timeline, Choi is not the founder of the hunters’ guild, as he does not have Cha Hae-In as lieutenant and was recruited by Woo Jinchul. However, in the original manhwa, he is indeed one of the founders.
Finally, in the light novel, Choi did not participate in Lee Minsung’s arrest.
