Physical Appearance
Black Maria stands out with her imposing height of 8.2 meters, an exceptional stature for a human. Her undeniable beauty elevates her to the rank of Oiran, a prestigious distinction she shares with figures like Komurasaki. Her long blonde hair is styled in the traditional geisha fashion, decorated with red and black flowers or sometimes accompanied by two swords. Her light blue eyes, enhanced by a strand delicately falling over her left eye, reinforce her mysterious aura. She also sports two long curved red horns, striking lipstick, and carefully manicured nails. She is often seen smoking a long pipe, accentuating her enigmatic character.

She wears an elegant and sensual black kimono, with a neckline revealing her right shoulder, adorned with a turquoise obi richly decorated with blue and yellow floral motifs. On her feet, black zōri with red straps (hanao) combine with traditional white tabi.
In her hybrid form linked to her Zoan Devil Fruit, her limbs resemble a spider’s appearance, each decorated with a personalized Jolly Roger, probably tattooed on her skin.
As a child, Black Maria sported a short ponytail hairstyle, with curved outward horns, and wore traditional clothes with dark polka dots adorned with flowers. She also carried a biwa tied on her back, symbolically linking her to a spider.
Personality
Black Maria initially presents a coquettish and seductive demeanor, approaching her tasks among the Tobiroppo with sometimes a relaxed mood. She knows how to be sensual in Kaido’s presence and shows genuine grace when hosting her captain’s guests.
In battle, she often prefers to retreat, enjoying Kaido’s company or playing music with her subordinates, avoiding direct confrontations and leaving others to fight her enemies. Despite this, she shows a discreet tenderness towards children, taking care of the injured Momonosuke before his kidnapping by Orochi.

However, beneath her playful exterior hides a formidable torturer, as ruthless as her peers in the Beast Pirates. Endowed with sharp strategic and manipulative skills, she devises effective plans, sometimes using violence and betrayal to achieve her goals. Her brutality towards Nico Robin is clear: she did not hesitate to mutilate her to impose obedience as long as her valuable decoding skills of the Poneglyphs are exploited.
Black Maria enjoys keeping her male captives as true “pets,” especially those showing a rebellious nature. Through torture, she enforces their submission and loyalty until they have no choice but to worship her servilely. Highly possessive, she does not tolerate any deviation in loyalty without severe reaction.

Robin
Capturing Nico Robin is a strategic priority for Black Maria, reducing her to a mere tool to decipher the Poneglyphs. She even plans to eliminate her after use. Despite these threats, Robin bravely resists, protecting her comrades with courage.
Skills and Powers
As an influential member of the Tobiroppo, Black Maria holds notable authority within the Beast Pirates ranks. Heading Onigashima’s Pleasure District, she supervises local activities firmly. Her high bounty of 480,000,000 berries attests to her formidable power and elite status under Kaido. She claims to be able to easily eliminate the Nine Red Scabbards, provoking some rivalry with Jack.

Furisode Wanyudo: a powerful semi-circular close combat move.
Oiran Knuckle: a rapid series of focused strikes, named during her fight with Robin.

Black Maria masters Observation Haki and Armament Haki perfectly, enhancing her formidable combat effectiveness.
Illusion Mist
She deploys an illusion mist technique capable of creating realistic images that manipulate perceptions, notably used against Nico Robin. These illusions feature the victims’ loved ones, amplifying the emotional impact. The origin and exact extent of this power remain mysterious, as well as its possible connection to her Devil Fruit.
Story in the Wano Kuni Arc
At the beginning of the Onigashima festivities, the Tobiroppo join Kaido to receive their orders. Black Maria exchanges with her peers about internal tensions while being tasked with finding Yamato, Kaido’s missing son. Capturing Yamato would give them a chance to challenge a Calamity for their position.
Instead of leaving on a mission, she chooses to stay at the banquet to accompany Kaido and Orochi, tending to Momonosuke before he is kidnapped, an event that deeply affects her.
During the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance battle, Black Maria and her subordinates choose caution by temporarily withdrawing, taking advantage to play shamisen and sing. She manages to trap Sanji in a snare, forcing him to call Nico Robin to trap her. Despite this, Robin intervenes with Brook’s help to counter the maneuver.
She uses her illusion mist to confuse Robin and Brook, but they manage to thwart her attacks with new techniques, severely injuring Black Maria and knocking her out, to the astonishment of her subordinates.
