Ashborn stands as a shadow warrior with an imposing stature, displaying a lean yet powerful musculature. His flamboyant purple hair contrasts with his eyes shining with a burning glow, revealing intense dark energy. He sports two gracefully curved black horns on his forehead, while his sharp claws far exceed the norm, testifying to his fearsome nature. His jet-black armor wraps his body majestically, giving him a silhouette both threatening and regal. Ashborn is characterized by profound compassion and genuine respect for life, contrasting with the image that his feared status as Shadow Monarch might evoke. Weary from the endless war between powerful Monarchs and the Rulers, he harbored a burning wish for lasting peace. Driven by this noble desire, he entrusted his incredible powers to a human, hoping that a mortal could succeed where divine entities had failed, finally bringing peace. His loyalty to the Absolute Being, creator of all these powers, remained unshaken despite revelations of dual truths that challenged this dogma. He pursued his quest, faithful to his original ideals, under the sacred banner of the Absolute Being.
History
Many centuries ago, in the fiery midst of an apocalyptic war, Ashborn valiantly fought alongside other Sovereigns, under the direct orders of the Absolute Being. This divine entity manipulated events like a chess master, viewing its creatures as mere pawns intended to maintain universal order. When his Sovereign allies rebelled against this tyranny, Ashborn was the only one to remain loyal, rejecting the revolt. Isolated, betrayed, and defeated, left for dead, he discovered in agony a titanic power hidden within him by the Absolute Being that could be activated. This revelation saved him, transforming him into the Shadow Monarch. Regaining his strength, he resumed the fight with superior vigor but soon realized he was now alone—the war over, the rebellion crushed, and the Absolute Being vanished into oblivion.
Over the years, after the strategic capture of the legendary Legia fortress by the Rulers, Ashborn understood that the Monarchs could not survive without his decisive intervention. He then offered his support, though it was met with suspicion by all. Thanks to his overwhelming strength, he temporarily stabilized the fragile balance, prolonging the conflict. His power provoked fear and jealousy, notably from Monarchs Rakan and Baran, who conspired to dethrone him but were easily defeated. In retaliation, Ashborn eliminated Baran, his former betrayal costing him dearly against his decimated shadow men.
Despite his triumphs, Ashborn faced the Rulers pleading for his forgiveness. Initially, he demanded their extermination to end the conflict but, overwhelmed by emotion, remained silent, unable to pronounce a verdict. Deciding to avenge Rakan, he withdrew to secretly rebuild his shadow army, allowing the Rulers to crush the surviving Monarchs forced into hiding. Shortly after, he rejoined the Monarchs, welcomed favorably by their supreme leader Antarès during a period marked by recent defeats.
Centuries later, as the Monarchs launched their invasion of the human world, Ashborn participated in the assault, seeking a place in this chaotic universe he had never truly felt his own. Simultaneously, he began searching for a suitable human host to bear his immense power, with the help of the mage Kandiaru, who accepted to serve him in exchange for immortality, preparing a program to identify and train the perfect vessel.
During these searches, Ashborn highlighted an extraordinary candidate: Sung Jinwoo. Despite his apparent weakness and near-death past, Jinwoo showed exceptional tenacity and courage, risking his life repeatedly to protect his loved ones. Convinced of his unique potential, Ashborn decided to make him his successor and vessel, gradually transferring his powers through a specially designed system.
D-Rank Dungeon Arc
Despite Kandiaru's reservations, Ashborn chose Jinwoo as host several months before the Monarchs' assault on the Rulers in the human world, beginning the gradual transformation of the young hunter into a vessel capable of channeling all his power.
Double Dungeon Arc
Upon Jinwoo reaching level 100, Ashborn warned of complete possession via the Double Dungeon but subtly betrayed Kandiaru by fully transferring his powers to Jinwoo and banishing him, thus granting Jinwoo full control over his body and destiny.
Monarchs War Arc
During a decisive clash, Jinwoo was killed by Rakan and propelled into an alternate reality, an illusion maintained by Ashborn himself. He revealed the true context of the cosmic war and explained why Jinwoo was chosen to bear the flame of the Shadow Monarch. Offering Jinwoo the choice of peace or fight, he allowed him to resume his battle in reality, reconnecting with his ancestral power.
Academy Arc
Informed by his wife Cha Hae-In of their son Suho's school difficulties due to his growing powers, Jinwoo understood Ashborn's role, assigned by the Absolute Being, who had endowed the Shadow Monarch with ultimate power capable of controlling or destroying his own creations in case of rebellion.
